Saw Gunner Army - The M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, or SAW, is a self-propelled, gas-operated, magazine-fed, or metal-detonating machine gun with a belt-mounted, light machine gun with a fixed scope and with a quick change barrel. The M249 engages targets up to 800 meters and fires the full NATO standard 5.56mm cartridge. The SAW is the main firefighting element of the fire team. The shooter has the option of using M16 magazines with 30 rounds or bullets from 200 round plastic magazines.

The SAW was developed through the Army's first research and development effort and eventually the joint NDO program in the late 1970s/early 1980s to replace semi-automatic weapons and firearms in the squad and fire team. When it was actually introduced in the mid-1980s, the SAW was billed as a one-to-one replacement for the "automatic rifle" (M16A1) in the fire team.

In this regard, the SAW filled the void left by the retirement of the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) in the 1950s, as automatic weapons (such as the M-14E2 / M16A1) failed as effective "fire" weapons. Early in the SAW field, the Army recognized the need for a Product Improvement Program (PIP) to improve the weapon. This effort resulted in a "PIP kit" that modifies the barrel, handguard, stock, pistol grip, stock, and sights.
