Two members of a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, family were recently convicted of stealing checks and defrauding the government of $500,000 in false tax returns, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Donna Karakatsani was sentenced to two years in prison, and her son Ivo Krasimirov Ivanov was sentenced to one and a half years in prison. According to WBTW-TV, his stepfather, Todar Milkov Stonechev, received five years of probation.

Their convictions come after the IRS began investigating them in 2020. Karagatsani and Ivanov used the names of foreign nationals - mostly Bulgarians - to file tax returns. Together, the two opened 68 bank accounts at 16 banks using 14 different names, WBTW-TV reported.
"At a time when many families were struggling to make mortgage payments," a Myrtle Beach family used this stolen money to buy homes.
"Our country is facing one of the most challenging virus outbreaks in recent memory, and one of our government's responses has been to establish the CARES Act to reduce the economic impact on its citizens," said Michael Specgard, special agent in the Office of the Chief inspector. Gen., WBTW-TV reported. Unfortunately, the defendants saw this as an opportunity to enrich themselves through the fraudulent scheme in which they were caught.

However, if you didn't receive the latest round of stimulus payments, the next round will be mailed starting Wednesday, March 24, the IRS says.
Many of these payments from this round will come as checks in the mail, the IRS said. Others may find a prepaid debit card. Both come in envelopes marked with a US Treasury seal, so keep your eyes open. For those with a debit card, instructions for securely activating your card will be included.
For taxpayers who receive their tax refunds by mail, this paper check will be the same, but the letter will be marked "Payment with Economic Impact."
Also, even in these later rounds of deliveries, some will also see direct deposits to their bank accounts.

As a reminder, those who are eligible but have not received their payment are encouraged to use the IRS incentive tracker.
Many people have reported seeing a "payment status not available" message on the website - fear not.
However, the agency noted that it will continue to send aid payments in batches and update the stimulus check tracker daily with new information for those still waiting.
